BRASA WALES BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU TRAINS AT THE AKINS ACADEMY OF MARTIAL ARTS, IN TONMAWR, SOUTH WALES. WE A NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION AND TEACH JUNIORS FROM 5 TO 14 YEARS OF AGE FOR FREE!! WE HAVE AN EXTREMELY HIGH LEVEL OF TUTION AT THE ACADEMY WITH CHECK MAT BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU BLACKBELTS RODRIGO CABRALL AND EDUARDO FERRERIA TAKING CLASSES ONCE A MONTH. THE DAY TO DAY RUNNING OF THE CLUB IS HEADED UP BY PHILLIP AKINS MA, BN(Hons) A PURPLE BELT IN BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU AND THE FOUNDER OF THE AKINS ACADEMY. PHILLIP ALSO HOLDS A 6TH DAN MASTERS GRADE IN TRADITIONAL JU JUTSU.

The 27th September 2008 was a landmark day for the Akins Academy, with Ryan Morgan, the Akins Academy Judo instructor and Akins Academy Judo and BJJ Team member winning Bronze at the coverted Great Britain Judo Masters Championships held in Walsall, Birmingham. In addition to this Ryan has also gained a place in the Great Britain Judo Team of 2008/2009. This is a great acheivement for Ryan who adds these accolades to his already impressive record of Gold medalist in the 2007 Scandinavia Open BJJ, Silver medalist at the European Championships 2008, Silver Medal at the Great Britain Ground Fighting Championships 2008, Gold Medal at the EFN Southern Area open 2007 and Bronze Medal at the High Wycombe Masters Judo Championships 2008. Phil and all at the Akins Academy would like to congratulate Ryan on this great achievement.   The Akins Academy continues to expand on our huge wealth of talent and championships and Ryan's impressive acheivement add to the acheivements of Phillip Akins 3x IBJJF European BJJ Championships medalist (Gold under 94k 2006, Silver Absolut3 2006, Silver under 94k 2008 Purple Belt), Jackie Morgan Silver Medalist IBJJF European Championships 2008, Greg Dummer Gold Medalist IBJJF European Championships 2008, Spencer Dummer Gold Medalist Scandinavia Open 2007, Gracie Invitational Gold Medalist 2006, Gareth Dummer UMA British Ground Fighting Championships Gold Medalist 200, and the list continues with our Junior team with Gareth Harris, Kaelum Lane and Heather Morgan, winning in excess of 12 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals and 6 Bronze in the space of 12 months. As many in the BJJ circle are now aware Leozinho and Ricardo Vieira the founders of Brasa BJJ have decided to leave the organisation Brasa to form a new BJJ team called Check Mat BJJ. Their aim is to purify BJJ and almost all of their old black belts from Brasa have followed them over the Check Mat BJJ. Brasa UK under the leadership of Rodrido, Eduardo and Thiago have decided to also follow their masters to Check Mat BJJ and the Akins Academy here in Wales will also be following our instructors over the Check Mat BJJ. There will be no change in the running of the academy just a purely visible change is the academy logo affiliates. The Akins Academy still strive to maintain the highest level of tuition across BJJ, Combat Ju Jutsu and Judo and will continue to hold regular class with high ranking BJJ balckbelts, and top level judo instructors.
